Gianluigi Buffon’s Parma were defeated by holders Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia round of 16 after extra time was required.
44-year-old legendary former Italy goalkeeper Buffon was playing for the Serie B team for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in October.
Parma took the lead with to a spectacular 25-yard effort from Stanko Juric, but Lautaro Martinez’s late deflection goal forced extra time.
The winning goal was scored as a result of Buffon’s punch clearing by Francesco Acerbi.
Buffon made his debut in this competition 25 years and 129 days ago. He won the cup once with Parma during his initial stint there and five times with Juventus.
If not for his excellent save to stop Edin Dzeko in the last seconds of regulation, the game might not have even reached overtime.
After leaving Parma for Juventus in 2000, Buffon returned to the team in 2021.
After the game, he posted on Instagram, “We struggled to follow a dream.” “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, it wasn’t enough. Even though losing is always depressing, nights like these will only help us realize our true worth.”
